Synthetic fuels are fuels made from water and carbon dioxide from the air. You split the water into hydrogen and oxygen, and combine the oxygen with CO2 to create hydrocarbons. Basically what burning fuel does but in reverse. If the energy used to do this comes from a sustainable source (i.e. wind or solar) you will have net zero emissions, and none of the environmental impact of mining the metals used in batteries. This could effectively make ICE engines better for the environment than EVs.

Oh yeah lets use electricity to separate hydrogen from water, more electricity to capture co2 from the atmosphere and than even more to combine them, that is so much smarter than just using the electricity to power the car. All these process drastically cut down efficiency, so you end up using a lot more energy to create the combustible than what you get. Let's be optimistic enough to believe that you can get all the electricity needed from clean sources, then again, why not using it to power electric vehicles?

Actually plants need CO2 for their life cycle. They inhake CO2 & exhale oxygen. In the process plants proliferate. If there's not enough atmospheric CO2 death of the planet will occur

Seems like everyone here is missing how inefficient (very expensive) this synthetic fuel would be if actually made/transported in a carbon neutral way. He already said it was expensive though. My guess is that it is so very expensive that very very few people would afford it. Maybe porche owners can afford it, but most folks will not.
Michael Torres
Michael Torres Pred 6 dnevi
@Blake Morris No, ice engines can burn hydrogen, but would need to be specially designed just for hydrogen. Synth gas is supposed to be used just like our current gas, no conversion, no re-design. But maybe synth gas includes advanced eco-friendly versions of things like bio-diesel, and E85?
Blake Morris
Blake Morris Pred 7 dnevi
@Michael Torres Im confused, I thought Efuel is basically hydrogen?
Michael Torres
Michael Torres Pred 7 dnevi
@Blake Morris Oh I am familiar with the concept of economies of scale, but that does not solve all problems. How about we consider using hydrogen as fuel (could be fuel cell, but also can be used in ICE engine.) I think that would be cheaper and more practical than carbon-neutral synth gas. You might reply that hydrogen is impractically expensive, and I could say "it would eventually get cheaper, just like how tesla started by selling a 250k roadster, now they are selling 50k sedans. invest in new technologies that makes things more efficient"

Now, I non-rationally like an engine that goes boom as much as the next guy. However, if there is a method of filtering CO2 out of the atmosphere (which I didn't know) and considering the fact that there is already way too much CO2 in our atmosphere... Wouldn't it be sensible to scale up that filtering of CO2 without pumping it back into the air?

The reason companies are launching electric cars now is so they can continue to produce dirty electricity for a while because its needed. And they also whant ppl to pay more for the electricity so companies producing fuel have time to invest in producing electricity instead. So everyone is happy and get to keep their money and stay on top of the world

First off, great video. I just wanted to add something that you guys didn’t really talk about. It’s a process called Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (discovered in the 1920s by German and Dutch scientists... later utilized by the Germans in wwII). Essentially it is Running carbon monoxide and hydrogen feed gas over a catalyst at high temperatures to produce a wide range of clean hydrocarbons with extremely low sulfur counts (as sulfur isn’t a reactant). Research is still being done on the fundamentals of the process but it hasn’t really taken off very well until recently due to the cost of the catalysts (typically Fe, Co, or Ru). Just something I thought y’all at donut might find interesting to look into.

Hydro electric power is another way to produce synthetic fuel as is Nuclear which likely would need to be used for electric vehicle charging as well. In BC Canada a very controversial Hydro Electric power dam is being built which is expected to have a negative return that is an economic disaster. Such a process for manufacturing synthetic fuel could change that.

The Greta Thundbergs and her zombie followers will suffer a broken brain when you tell them that. Simply the truth. Humans have not created Co2 and unleashed it apon this Earth.

Its a bit disingenuous to call it a draw on environmental impact during use of the car. Using electricity directly is always going to be more efficient than adding extra in-between steps to get the cars wheels turning. It would take more electricity to create enough synthetic fuel to travel 100 miles than to just go that 100 miles by using an electric engine. And where the specific electricity comes from for making it is completely irrelevant. If you use more solar and wind electricity to make one thing, that's less of the available solar and wind energy that you get to use for other things.

If you give EV the same requirements you do for synthetic fuels, EV’s and synthetics energy would both be made from carbon neutral sources. The difference being EV’s dont deal in the carbon cycle at at all for operating. But EV’s win on efficiently. You’ll never get the same efficiency as an electric motor over a ICE. So far less electricity used. Now for long haul and other applications there will still be a need for this kind of fuel. I could see them coexisting and having vehicles where it makes sense to use one or the other. But from a solar panel right into your car is gonna be far cheaper and more efficient than this large conversion process.

Battery acid does more harm to the earth then natural gas. Imagine where all the batteries are gonna go when they're bad. A landfill or junkyard. And they're gonna leak and leak and ruin the natural ground water under the earth and the quality of the dirt for farming. If anything we should be focusing on its hydrogen. Nice marketing play by Porsche but it’s not really doable at scale. Although there is too much CO2 in the atmosphere, its concentration in the air is very small. About 0.05%. This a low density gas too. That’s about 1g per cubic meter of normal air. To capture a large quantity’s of carbon, you would have to get enormous quantity of air inside your extractor. Imagine having to produce millions of tons of this fuel. Also it is very difficult to extract low density gas mixed with other gas. It can be done for a few vehicles, at a high price, but it cannot be done at large for the automotive industry
Devin Tripp

You forgot to mention the actual problem with co2 is that it’s in the atmosphere. So taking it out of the ground and putting it in the atmosphere in the same amounts doesn’t solve the problem
